Dhul-Hijjah is one of the four sacred months in Islam — the month of Hajj, Arafat, Eid al-Adha, and Qurbani. Discover its virtues, key events, and how to honor it.

The Blessed Month of Dhul-Hijjah: Virtues, Significance & Sunnah

Among the twelve months of the Islamic calendar, four are designated as sacred months (al-ashhur al-hurum) — Dhul Qa'dah, Dhul Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab. Of these four, Dhul-Hijjah carries a unique distinction: it is the month of pilgrimage, the month of Eid al-Adha, the month in which Allah perfected the religion, and the month containing the ten days described by the Prophet ﷺ as the most beloved of the year.

This page explains why Dhul-Hijjah is called "the blessed month" — its meaning, its position in the Islamic calendar, the events it contains, and how every Muslim is invited to honor it.

What does Dhul-Hijjah mean?

The Arabic name ذو الحجة (Dhul-Hijjah) literally means "the possessor of the pilgrimage" or "the one of Hajj."

  • Dhu (ذو) — possessor of, the one of.
  • Al-Hijjah (الحجة) — the pilgrimage.

The name reflects the month's defining feature: it is the month in which Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, is performed. In South Asian usage, Dhul-Hijjah is also called Zil Hajj (a regional pronunciation) and the month appears in many traditional calendars and household conversations under that name.

Position in the Islamic calendar

Dhul-Hijjah is the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar (Hijri) calendar, following Dhul Qa'dah and preceding Muharram (the start of the new Islamic year).

# Month Days
1 Muharram 30
2 Safar 29
3 Rabi al-Awwal 30
4 Rabi al-Thani 29
5 Jumada al-Awwal 30
6 Jumada al-Thani 29
7 Rajab 30
8 Sha'ban 29
9 Ramadan 30
10 Shawwal 29
11 Dhul Qa'dah 30
12 Dhul-Hijjah 29 or 30

Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, Dhul-Hijjah moves about 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar.

One of the four sacred months

Allah declares in the Quran:

"Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve, [as ordained] in the Book of Allah on the Day He created the heavens and the earth — of these, four are sacred. That is the upright religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them." — Surah At-Tawbah 9:36

The four sacred months — Dhul Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab — are months in which sin is more grievous and reward is multiplied. Pre-Islamic Arabs honored these months by suspending all warfare. Islam preserved this respect, deepening it with worship.

Dhul-Hijjah is the only sacred month that contains a major obligatory pillar of Islam — Hajj.

What makes Dhul-Hijjah uniquely blessed?

Five reasons stand out.

1. It contains the most beloved days to Allah

The Prophet ﷺ said: "There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days." (Sahih al-Bukhari) — referring to the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. Read more in our hub page on the best 10 days of Dhul Hijjah.

2. Allah swears by these days in the Quran

"By the dawn, and by the ten nights..." — Surah Al-Fajr 89:1–2

When Allah swears by something, it points to its weight and value. The classical commentators identify these "ten nights" as the first ten of Dhul-Hijjah.

3. It contains the Day of Arafat

The 9th of Dhul-Hijjah is the Day of Arafat — the spiritual peak of the entire Islamic year. The Prophet ﷺ said the dua of Arafat is the best dua of all. For non-pilgrims, fasting on Arafat wipes away the sins of the past and coming year. Read more in why Hajj is important.

4. It contains the day Allah perfected the religion

Allah revealed His final declaration about the religion of Islam on the Day of Arafat in the year 10 AH:

"This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion." — Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:3

The verse was revealed at Arafat during the Prophet's only Hajj.

5. It contains Eid al-Adha and the Days of Tashreeq

The 10th of Dhul-Hijjah is Eid al-Adha — the festival of sacrifice. The 11th, 12th, and 13th are the Days of Tashreeq"days of eating, drinking, and remembrance of Allah," as the Prophet ﷺ described them.

Key events that take place in Dhul-Hijjah

1 Dhul-Hijjah New moon — start of Hajj season

How to honor the blessed month

You don't need to be on Hajj to claim the rewards of Dhul-Hijjah. The Prophet ﷺ explicitly opened the season's blessings to every Muslim, anywhere on earth.

Six recommended deeds

  1. Fast as many of the first nine days as you are able. Fasting on the 9th (Arafat) is especially virtuous for non-pilgrims.
  2. Recite takbeer abundantly throughout the day, beginning from the 1st of Dhul-Hijjah.
  3. Increase Sadaqah. Every act of charity in these days is multiplied.
  4. Recite the Quran. Specifically, Surah Al-Hajj.
  5. Make sincere dua and tawbah. These are days of accepted prayer.
  6. Give Qurbani on Eid al-Adha. The crowning act of the season.

A Sunnah for those intending Qurbani

From the start of Dhul-Hijjah until after the sacrifice, those who intend to give Qurbani should refrain from cutting hair, trimming nails, or removing skin. This is a beautiful symbolic act that mirrors the state of pilgrims in Ihram.

A month for every Muslim

The Prophet ﷺ taught that the spirit of Dhul-Hijjah belongs to every Muslim — not just the two million standing at Arafat. Even fasting one day, giving one act of charity, or whispering one sincere dua during these days lays up reward of a different magnitude.
