The 7 steps of Hajj explained
Every year, millions of Muslims travel to Makkah to perform Hajj โ the fifth pillar of Islam. The pilgrimage involves a series of sacred rituals performed across multiple days and locations. While scholars sometimes count the steps differently, the core rituals of Hajj can be broken down into 7 essential stages.
This guide walks you through each step in order, day by day, so you know exactly what happens and when.

Step 1: Ihram โ entering the sacred state
When: 8th Dhul Hijjah (or before, depending on when you arrive) Where: At the designated Miqat (boundary point) for your travel route
Ihram is not just clothing โ it is a spiritual state of consecration. Before crossing the Miqat boundary, every pilgrim must:
Physical preparation:
- Perform Ghusl (full ritual bath)
- Men wear two unstitched white sheets (Izar and Rida) โ no underwear, socks, or headcover
- Women wear normal modest clothing (any colour) โ face and hands remain uncovered
- Apply fragrance before entering Ihram (not after)
- Trim nails and remove unwanted hair beforehand
Spiritual preparation:
- Make the intention (Niyyah) for Hajj: "Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan" (Here I am, O Allah, for Hajj)
- Begin reciting the Talbiyah: "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka La Shareeka Laka Labbayk. Innal Hamda Wan-Ni'mata Laka Wal-Mulk, La Shareeka Lak"
- Continue reciting Talbiyah throughout Hajj until the stoning on 10th Dhul Hijjah
Ihram restrictions (things you cannot do):
- Cut hair or nails
- Wear perfume or scented products
- Cover the head (men) or face (women, according to some scholars)
- Wear stitched clothing (men only)
- Hunt or kill animals (except harmful ones)
- Engage in marital relations
- Argue, fight, or use foul language
Step 2: Mina โ the day of preparation (Yawm al-Tarwiyah)
When: 8th Dhul Hijjah Where: Mina (a tent city ~8km from Makkah)
After entering Ihram, pilgrims travel to Mina where they spend the day and night in worship and preparation for the most important day of Hajj.
What you do in Mina:
- Pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha (shortened but not combined for Hanafis) and Fajr
- Engage in Dhikr, Quran recitation, and supplication
- Rest and prepare mentally for the Day of Arafat
- Stay overnight (this is Sunnah, not obligatory)
Mina today consists of thousands of air-conditioned tents arranged by country and tour group. The valley transforms into a temporary city of 2+ million people.
Step 3: Arafat โ the pillar of Hajj (Wuquf)
When: 9th Dhul Hijjah (from after Dhuhr until Maghrib) Where: Plain of Arafat (~14km from Mina)
This is the most important ritual of Hajj. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Hajj is Arafat." Missing this step invalidates your entire Hajj โ there is no substitute.
What happens at Arafat:
- After Fajr in Mina, pilgrims travel to the plain of Arafat
- From Dhuhr (combined with Asr, shortened) until sunset, you stand in supplication
- This is the greatest day for du'a โ Allah descends to the lowest heaven and forgives abundantly
- You can stand anywhere on Arafat (not just at Jabal Rahmah โ the hill is not necessary)
- The Prophet delivered his famous Farewell Sermon here
How to maximise Arafat:
- Raise your hands in continuous du'a
- Ask for forgiveness sincerely
- Make du'a for yourself, your family, and the Ummah
- Recite "La ilaha illAllahu wahdahu la shareeka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shay-in Qadeer" โ the best du'a on this day
- Cry before Allah โ this is the day of mercy
Important: You must remain within the boundaries of Arafat. The boundary is clearly marked. Being even slightly outside invalidates your Hajj.
Step 4: Muzdalifah โ night under the open sky
When: Night of 9th to 10th Dhul Hijjah Where: Muzdalifah (between Arafat and Mina)
After sunset at Arafat, pilgrims depart for Muzdalifah without praying Maghrib at Arafat. Upon arrival:
What you do:
- Pray Maghrib and Isha combined (shortened) โ this is the only time these two prayers are combined
- Sleep under the open sky (no tents, minimal shelter)
- Collect 7 pebbles (chickpea-sized) for stoning the Jamarat the next day (or collect all 49/70 here)
- Engage in Dhikr and supplication
- Depart after Fajr (weak, elderly, and women may leave after midnight)
Muzdalifah is a humbling experience โ millions sleeping on bare ground as equals before Allah, regardless of wealth or status.
Step 5: Rami โ stoning the Jamarat
When: 10th Dhul Hijjah (after sunrise), then 11th and 12th (after Dhuhr) Where: Jamarat Bridge in Mina
Stoning commemorates Prophet Ibrahim (AS) rejecting Shaytan three times when he tried to dissuade him from sacrificing his son.
On the 10th (Eid day):
- Stone ONLY Jamarat al-Aqabah (the largest pillar) with 7 pebbles
- Say "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar" with each throw
- Stop reciting the Talbiyah after this stoning
On the 11th and 12th:
- Stone ALL THREE pillars: small (Jamarat al-Oola), medium (Jamarat al-Wusta), then large (Jamarat al-Aqabah)
- 7 pebbles at each = 21 pebbles per day
- Make du'a between the first and second, and between the second and third
- Must be done after Dhuhr (before Dhuhr is not valid according to the majority)
On the 13th (optional):
- If you stay a third night in Mina, stone all three again
- If you leave before sunset on the 12th, the 13th is not required
Modern context: The Jamarat Bridge is now a multi-level structure to manage crowd flow. Follow your group leader's instructions and be patient โ stampedes have occurred historically due to overcrowding.
Step 6: Qurbani (Hady) and shaving
When: 10th Dhul Hijjah (after stoning) Where: Mina (slaughterhouses)
After stoning on the 10th, two important acts follow:
Animal sacrifice (Hady):
- Obligatory for Hajj Tamattu and Qiran pilgrims
- A sheep, goat, or 1/7th of a cow/camel is sacrificed
- Most pilgrims purchase a voucher through their tour operator or the Saudi Hady project โ you do not need to be physically present
- The meat is distributed to the poor in Makkah and exported to needy countries
Shaving or trimming (Halq/Taqseer):
- Men: Shaving the entire head (Halq) is preferable and carries greater reward. Trimming (Taqseer) is also valid.
- Women: Cut approximately one finger-length from the ends of the hair (not shaving)
After shaving, you enter a partial release from Ihram (Tahallul al-Awwal):
- You can now wear normal clothes, apply perfume, and do everything except marital relations
- Marital relations remain prohibited until after Tawaf al-Ifadah
Step 7: Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'i โ completing the Hajj
When: 10th Dhul Hijjah (or 11th/12th โ can be delayed) Where: Masjid al-Haram, Makkah
This is the second essential pillar of Hajj (after Arafat). Without it, your Hajj remains incomplete.
Tawaf al-Ifadah:
- Perform 7 circuits around the Kaaba, starting from the Black Stone (Hajr al-Aswad)
- Walk counter-clockwise
- Make du'a and Dhikr during each circuit
- Pray 2 Rak'at behind Maqam Ibrahim afterward (if possible)
Sa'i:
- Walk 7 lengths between the hills of Safa and Marwah (Safa โ Marwah = 1, Marwah โ Safa = 2, etc.)
- Men jog lightly between the green markers
- Make du'a at Safa and Marwah each time
After completing Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'i, you are in full release from Ihram โ all restrictions are lifted, including marital relations.
The farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wida)
Before leaving Makkah, every pilgrim must perform a farewell Tawaf โ 7 circuits around the Kaaba as a final goodbye. This is obligatory (Wajib) for non-Makkah residents.
- Performed without Sa'i
- Should be the last thing you do in Makkah before departing
- Women in menstruation are excused from this Tawaf
Common mistakes pilgrims make
- Leaving Arafat before Maghrib โ invalidates the standing for some scholars
- Stoning before Dhuhr on the 11th/12th โ not valid according to the majority
- Not staying within Arafat boundaries โ check the markers carefully
- Rushing Tawaf and Sa'i โ be present, make du'a, don't just walk
- Skipping the farewell Tawaf โ a penalty (dam) is required if you miss it without excuse
- Not collecting enough pebbles โ bring extras in case you miss
Tips for a smoother Hajj
- Stay hydrated โ Makkah in summer exceeds 45ยฐC
- Wear comfortable footwear โ you will walk 10โ20km daily
- Keep a small bag with water, ID, phone, pebbles, and medication
- Learn the du'as in advance โ you do not want to waste Arafat reading from a book
- Be patient โ crowds are enormous; push comes with the territory
- Choose your group wisely โ a good scholar-guide makes all the difference
Performing Qurbani while on Hajj
If you are performing Hajj Tamattu or Qiran, Qurbani (Hady) is obligatory on you in Makkah. However, many pilgrims also give additional Qurbani back home to feed the needy. HBSMWA handles your at-home Qurbani in Pakistan and Gaza with complete Shariah compliance and transparency.
Give your Qurbani through HBSMWA and focus on your worship in the holy lands.
