Dua on the Day of Arafah: Best Duas & How to Maximise This Day

Published by HBSMWA · 4 June 2026 · 5 min read

“The best dua is the dua on the Day of Arafah.”

— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Tirmidhi, Hadith 3585 — Hasan)

The Prophet ﷺ designated the Day of Arafah as the single best day in the entire year for supplication. Not Laylatul Qadr, not Ramadan nights — Arafah. This is because Allah on this day draws close to His servants in a special way, forgiving, listening, and answering dua on a scale not matched by any other day.

Why Is Dua on Arafah So Powerful?

Several factors combine to make Arafah the most powerful day for dua in the Islamic calendar:

  • It is one of the best days of the year (the first ten of Dhul Hijjah).
  • Allah descends to the lowest heaven (in a manner befitting His majesty) and attends to His servants with particular care.
  • Millions of pilgrims are standing at Arafah making dua simultaneously — and you, fasting at home, are spiritually joining them.
  • The Prophet ﷺ spent his Arafah afternoon entirely in dua — from the time the sun declined until sunset. This extended, continuous supplication is his sunnah.

How Long Should You Make Dua on Arafah?

The Prophet ﷺ's practice during his Farewell Hajj was to stand at Arafah from midday (after Dhuhr and Asr combined) until sunset, engaged in constant dua. For Muslims at home, scholars recommend spending the afternoon — after Dhuhr — in extended, heartfelt dua and dhikr until Maghrib.

The dua does not need to be in Arabic — Allah understands every language and every cry of the heart. Make dua in your own words, in your own language, for everything you need, want, and hope for.

Authentic Duas for the Day of Arafah

Meaning: There is no god but Allah, alone, without any partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things powerful.

Tirmidhi — described as the best thing the Prophet ﷺ and previous prophets said on Arafah

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ

SubhanAllahi wa bihamdih

Meaning: Glory be to Allah and all praise is His.

Bukhari & Muslim — expiate sins even if they are as numerous as the foam of the sea

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni

Meaning: O Allah, You are the Pardoner, You love to pardon, so pardon me.

Tips for Maximising Your Arafah Dua

  • Be in a state of wudu — purity of body accompanies sincerity of heart.
  • Face the Qiblah — face Makkah when making dua.
  • Raise your hands — the Prophet ﷺ said Allah is too shy to let raised hands return empty.
  • Begin with praise and salawaat — praise Allah and send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ before your personal requests.
  • Be specific — ask for specific things by name. Health, rizq, iman, a spouse, children, Jannah.
  • Be persistent — repeat dua multiple times. Repetition is sunnah.
  • Make dua for others too — dua for your Muslim brothers and sisters earns extra reward.
  • End with salawaat — dua bracketed by praise and salawaat is more likely to be accepted.

Combine Dua with Sadqa on Arafah

One of the most powerful combinations in Islamic practice is supplication joined with charity. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Sadqa extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire.” (Tirmidhi). Giving sadqa on Arafah — on the best day for dua — is a spiritually potent combination that many scholars specifically recommend.

Pair Your Arafah Dua with Sadqa

Give charity on the greatest day of the year — maximise your worship and your reward.
