The Festival of Sacrifice
What Is Eid ul Adha?
Eid ul Adha (ΨΉΩΨ― Ψ§ΩΨ£ΨΆΨΩ) β also written Eid al-Adha or Eid ul Azha β is the second and greater of the two Islamic Eids. It falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and lasts through the 13th (the Days of Tashreeq).
It commemorates the supreme test of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) β his willingness to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (AS) in obedience to Allah. At the moment of the sacrifice, Allah replaced Ismail with a ram, rewarding Ibrahim's absolute trust and submission. Muslims across the world honour this act each year through Qurbani (the sacrifice of a permitted animal).
Eid ul Adha also coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage β millions of Muslims converge on Makkah to perform the once-in-a-lifetime journey, with the Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah) being the spiritual centrepiece.
