The Takbeer of Tashreeq is recited from Fajr on the Day of Arafah until Asr on the last day of Tashreeq. Learn the exact words, the meaning, and the days to recite it in 2026.

Takbeer of Tashreeq 2026: Words, Meaning & When to Recite

During the days of Eid al-Adha, the air fills with the sound of "Allahu Akbar." This is the Takbeer of Tashreeq — a glorification of Allah that the Companions recited aloud in the markets and mosques during the most sacred days of the year.

What is the Takbeer of Tashreeq?

The Takbeer of Tashreeq is the prescribed glorification of Allah recited after the obligatory prayers during the days surrounding Eid al-Adha. It magnifies Allah, declares His oneness, and expresses gratitude — the very purpose of the Days of Tashreeq.

The words of the Takbeer

The most common wording is:

"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, wa Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd."

"Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise."

Some add a third Allahu Akbar at the beginning; both forms are valid and reported from the Companions.

When to recite it in 2026

The Takbeer of Tashreeq is recited after every obligatory prayer, from Fajr on the Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah) until Asr on the last day of Tashreeq (13 Dhul Hijjah).

Marker Date 2026
Starts: Fajr, Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah) Tuesday 26 May 2026
Eid al-Adha (10 Dhul Hijjah) Wednesday 27 May 2026
Ends: Asr, last day of Tashreeq (13 Dhul Hijjah) Saturday 30 May 2026

Dates depend on the moon sighting and may shift by a day.

That is a total of five days. Men traditionally recite it aloud; women recite it quietly.

Why we recite it

The Days of Tashreeq are described in the Quran as "appointed days" in which Allah is to be remembered (2:203). The Prophet ﷺ called them "days of eating, drinking and remembrance of Allah." The Takbeer turns the celebration of Eid into an act of worship — joy and gratitude expressed together.

For many families, that gratitude takes practical form through Qurbani, feeding the poor during the very days the Takbeer is recited.
