Water Well Charity in Pakistan: How We Choose Build Locations

Published by HBSMWA · 4 June 2026 · 5 min read

One of the most common questions from donors is: “How do you choose where to build the well?” It is a fair question. At HBSMWA, we do not simply build where it is easiest — we build where the need is greatest. Here is our process.

Our Location Selection Methodology

Step 1: Community Identification

Our local field teams — based in Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, and KPK — maintain relationships with local leaders, imams, and health workers in rural communities. These contacts surface villages that lack functioning water access and are unlikely to receive government infrastructure investment in the near term.

Step 2: Need Assessment

Before any well is approved, a field officer visits the site to assess:

  • Current water source and distance from homes
  • Water quality testing (if a source exists)
  • Population size and composition (number of households, children, elderly)
  • Presence of any NGO or government intervention already planned
  • Community land ownership and permission for construction

Step 3: Technical Survey

A local drilling engineer assesses the site to determine the expected depth required to reach clean, reliable groundwater. This determines the well type and cost. In Tharparkar, for instance, water may require drilling to 300+ feet. In parts of Punjab, 80–100 feet may suffice.

Step 4: Construction and Quality Control

Construction is undertaken by vetted local contractors under HBSMWA supervision. A concrete apron and protective seal are installed around every well to prevent surface contamination. The name plaque is installed before the final handover.

Step 5: Donor Reporting

Within 45 days of donation, every donor receives a full report including GPS coordinates, photos of the well, the name plaque, and community members using it. This documentation is your proof of impact — and your connection to the people who now have clean water because of you.

Where We Currently Build

Tharparkar, Sindh

One of Pakistan's most arid districts. Seasonal water ponds dry up for months. Women walk 3–4 hours daily for water.

Well type

Deep bore wells (200–300 ft)

Donor impact

High — multiple families per well due to community clustering

Balochistan

Massive province with scarce infrastructure. Many villages have no functioning water point within 5km.

Well type

Deep bore wells and solar systems

Donor impact

Very high — extremely under-served relative to population

Interior Sindh

Communities rely on polluted irrigation canals. Arsenic and agricultural chemical contamination common.

Well type

Deep bore wells with filtration

Donor impact

High — clean water replaces heavily contaminated surface sources

South Punjab

Flood-affected districts face recurring groundwater contamination. Many hand pumps installed post-flood fail within a year.

Well type

Concrete-sealed hand pumps and motorised wells

Donor impact

Moderate to high — dependent on depth of water table

Remote Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Mountain and hilly terrain makes infrastructure difficult. Small, isolated communities often completely unserved.

Well type

Hand pumps and small bore wells

Donor impact

High — isolated communities with no alternatives

Can I Choose the Location of My Well?

You can specify a region preference (e.g., “Tharparkar” or “Balochistan”) when donating, and we will do our best to build in that area based on current project availability. In cases where a specific location is requested but no suitable site is identified there, we will notify you before proceeding.

Some donors — particularly those with family roots in a specific area — prefer to fund wells in their ancestral village. Contact us directly if you have a specific location request.
