One of the most common questions from donors is: “How do you choose where to build the well?” It is a fair question. At HBSMWA, we do not simply build where it is easiest — we build where the need is greatest. Here is our process.
Our Location Selection Methodology
Step 1: Community Identification
Our local field teams — based in Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, and KPK — maintain relationships with local leaders, imams, and health workers in rural communities. These contacts surface villages that lack functioning water access and are unlikely to receive government infrastructure investment in the near term.
Step 2: Need Assessment
Before any well is approved, a field officer visits the site to assess:
- Current water source and distance from homes
- Water quality testing (if a source exists)
- Population size and composition (number of households, children, elderly)
- Presence of any NGO or government intervention already planned
- Community land ownership and permission for construction
Step 3: Technical Survey
A local drilling engineer assesses the site to determine the expected depth required to reach clean, reliable groundwater. This determines the well type and cost. In Tharparkar, for instance, water may require drilling to 300+ feet. In parts of Punjab, 80–100 feet may suffice.
Step 4: Construction and Quality Control
Construction is undertaken by vetted local contractors under HBSMWA supervision. A concrete apron and protective seal are installed around every well to prevent surface contamination. The name plaque is installed before the final handover.
Step 5: Donor Reporting
Within 45 days of donation, every donor receives a full report including GPS coordinates, photos of the well, the name plaque, and community members using it. This documentation is your proof of impact — and your connection to the people who now have clean water because of you.
