Surah Al-Hajj is the 22nd chapter of the Quran. Discover its key themes, verses about the pilgrimage, and the most important Quranic teachings on Hajj.

Surah Al-Hajj & Hajj in the Quran: Verses, Themes & Tafsir

The Quran speaks of Hajj in many places โ€” but only one chapter is named after the pilgrimage itself: Surah Al-Hajj (ุณูˆุฑุฉ ุงู„ุญุฌ), the 22nd chapter of the Quran. Across 78 verses, it weaves together themes of resurrection, the sanctity of the sacred sites, the universal call to monotheism, and the rites of pilgrimage. This guide walks through the surah and the most important Quranic verses on Hajj.

Surah Al-Hajj at a glance

  • Surah number: 22
  • Number of ayat (verses): 78
  • Place of revelation: Mixed โ€” some verses revealed in Makkah, some in Madinah
  • Main themes: The Day of Judgment, Hajj rituals, the universal call of Ibrahim (AS), tolerance of religious freedom, mercy of Allah
  • Position in the Quran: Beginning of the 17th Juz'

Surah Al-Hajj is unique. It is one of the few surahs that contains both Makkan-style verses (focused on resurrection and the Day of Judgment) and Madinan-style verses (legal rulings, permission to fight in self-defense, rules of pilgrimage). Scholars believe it was revealed in stages.

The opening: the trembling of the Last Day

Surah Al-Hajj opens with one of the most powerful warnings in the entire Quran:

"O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the Hour is a terrible thing. On the day you see it, every nursing mother will be distracted from that which she nurses, and every pregnant woman will deliver her burden, and you will see the people drunk while they are not drunk, but the punishment of Allah is severe." โ€” Surah Al-Hajj 22:1โ€“2

The surah begins with the Day of Judgment, not with Hajj rituals. Why? Because Hajj is, in essence, a rehearsal for that Day โ€” the standing at Arafat is the standing of judgment, the white ihram is the white shroud of the grave.

The proclamation: Ibrahim's call

Verse 27 contains one of the most famous Hajj-related verses in the Quran:

"And proclaim to the people the Hajj; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass." โ€” Surah Al-Hajj 22:27

This was Allah's command to Prophet Ibrahim (AS) after he completed building the Kaaba. He climbed a hill and called out the invitation to pilgrimage. Forty centuries later, that call is still being answered. Read the full account in the story of Hajj.

The rites described

Verse 28 lays out the spiritual purpose of the pilgrimage:

"That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals." โ€” Surah Al-Hajj 22:28

The verse continues with a teaching that shapes Qurbani to this day: "So eat of them and feed the miserable and poor." The sacrifice is not for Allah's hunger โ€” it is for the poor. This same principle underpins HBSMWA's Qurbani 2026 program, where every share feeds families in need.

Verse 29 prescribes the ritual completion:

"Then let them end their untidiness and fulfill their vows and circumambulate the ancient House." โ€” Surah Al-Hajj 22:29

This is the basis for the Halq (shaving the head) and the Tawaf al-Ifadah.

The sanctity of the sacred sites

Surah Al-Hajj makes clear that the sanctuary of Makkah is not just a building โ€” it is a sanctuary in the deepest sense. Verse 25 warns against violations within it. Verse 32 captures one of the most quoted teachings on the inner meaning of ritual:

"And whoever honors the symbols of Allah โ€” indeed, it is from the piety of hearts." โ€” Surah Al-Hajj 22:32

The phrase sha'a'ir Allah (symbols of Allah) refers to the Hajj rites, the sacrificial animals, and the sacred sites. To honor them outwardly is meaningless without the piety of the heart.

Permission to defend the faith

Embedded in the same surah is one of the earliest Quranic permissions for self-defense:

"Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged." โ€” Surah Al-Hajj 22:39

This positioning is striking. The surah of pilgrimage is also the surah where the Ummah is first granted permission to defend itself. The two are linked โ€” the freedom to perform Hajj depends on the freedom to live as Muslims at all.

Other key Hajj verses across the Quran

Surah Al-Baqarah contains the most extensive legal verses on Hajj and Umrah:

"And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah." โ€” Surah Al-Baqarah 2:196

"Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein, [let there be] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj. And whatever good you do โ€” Allah knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allah. So fear Me, O you of understanding." โ€” Surah Al-Baqarah 2:197

Verse 197 is one of the most quoted verses in pre-Hajj reminders. The "best provision" is not luggage. It is taqwa โ€” God-consciousness.

Surah Aal-Imran declares the obligation of Hajj:

"And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House โ€” for whoever is able to find thereto a way." โ€” Surah Aal-Imran 3:97

Hajj in Arabic โ€” language notes

For non-Arabic speakers, a few terms recur throughout the surah:

  • ุญุฌ (Hajj) โ€” pilgrimage; from a root meaning "to set out for a sacred destination."
  • ุจูŠุช (Bayt) โ€” house, referring to the Kaaba (Bayt Allah โ€” the House of Allah).
  • ุดุนุงุฆุฑ ุงู„ู„ู‡ (Sha'a'ir Allah) โ€” symbols of Allah; the rites of Hajj.
  • ุงู„ุทูˆุงู (At-Tawaf) โ€” circumambulation of the Kaaba.
  • ุงู„ู†ุญุฑ (An-Nahr) โ€” the sacrifice; the day of sacrifice (10th Dhul Hijjah) is also called Yawm an-Nahr.

Reading Surah Al-Hajj this Hajj season

It is a Sunnah-rich practice to read Surah Al-Hajj in the days leading up to Eid al-Adha. Many scholars recommend reading the surah on the Day of Arafat (9th Dhul Hijjah) along with abundant dua and dhikr.

If you do not yet know the meaning of what you recite, this is the best season to learn. The Quran's verses on Hajj are not abstract โ€” they describe the same circuits, the same stones, the same sacrifice that pilgrims are completing in real time, that very week.

Living the verses

The Quran ties Hajj inseparably to charity โ€” "feed the miserable and poor." Whether you are on Hajj or at home, you can answer that command.
